Knights Templar Visit All Saints
Recent Visitation from the Order of the Knights Templar
Once again All Saints was privileged to host the Prescott Commandry of the Order of the Knights Templar. All Saints’ Gary Graveline and James “Robbie” Robinson are members of the Prescott Commandry, where Gary is the Commander. Our former Rector, Fr. John Bourcet, himself a Knight, initiated this annual visit.
There are many historical accounts of the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Jesus Christ, or “Knights of the Temple,” more commonly referred to as Knights Templar. They were formed after Jerusalem was captured by the Crusaders in 1099, and pilgrims began making their way to the Holy City to worship. Many fell prey to Moslems and brigands, and the bleached bodies of the pilgrims became a common sight. With Jerusalem under control of the Crusaders, the plight of the pilgrims came to the attention of a small band of Crusaders looking for a cause, and thus Templary was born to protect Christian pilgrims.
This was the era of chivalric ascendancy, and the Knights captured the hearts and wealth of the public and Royalty. The Knights became so wealthy and powerful they became the envy of the reigning kings, especially Philip the Fair, King of France. King Philip, with Pope Clement, seized Grand Master Jacques DeMolay and his officers and had them burned at the stake in 1314 for alleged heresy and other accusations. Their wealth was confiscated, and Templary moved “underground.”
Since then, stories, intrigue, and rumor have flourished. When it re-emerged in the 1700’s, it was part of Freemasonry. There is no reliable proof, however, of any direct connection between the ancient order and the modern order known today as the Knights Templar.
It exists today as the top ranking Masonic organization in the York Rite of Freemasonry. Today, it is a Christian-oriented charitable organization that organizes fund-raising activities for the support of Masonic-related youth groups and other charitable purposes. All Saints is blessed to help support their modern causes.
